Climate News:  "November 2009 was warmer than October 2009 in Lincoln, NE"

No, that's not a mis-print.

The average high temperature in November 2009 in Lincoln, NE, was 57.6 F
The average high temperature in October 2009 in Lincoln, NE, was 55.7 F

November 2009 high temperatures in Lincoln averaged 1.9 F warmer than October 2009!

How rare is this to have November be warmer than October in Lincoln, NE?  Very rare.

In fact this has only occurred once before in the 123 years of data (1887-2009) for Lincoln and that was in 1925 when November 1925 average high temperatures were 0.2 F warmer than the previous month October 1925.

Contrast November 2009 with 1940 when November 1940 high temperatures were 33.5 F degrees colder than the average high temperatures in the previous month of October 1940!

The mean temperature (the average of the daily high AND low temperatures) for November 2009 (44.0 F) was slightly cooler than October 2009 (46.0 F).  So it was not the daily mean temperatures (average of the daily highs and lows) or the daily low temperatures but instead, the daily high temperatures that were so unusual when comparing November 2009 to October 2009.

It would be nice to continue this trend into December, but that is highly unlikely!
